It only took two months. But here I am again from the virtual unknown...known as every-day life. There is no explanation for my absence, other than I've been too busy with other endeavors to conjure up a blog post. Originally, I held off as much as possible once Dabysan confirmed to me the 2nd-most-coveted holy grail of sports trophies (#1 with a bullet being the Stanley Cup) was due to arrive on my doorstep about...hmm...a month ago. That was to be my return blog post. Alas, no trophy yet. And I don't have my own versions of Christopher, Silvio, or Paulie to hasten the delivery.
Let's see; what else is new in Capn's world. The middle of May cannot arrive quickly enough as Laurie & I will set sail for Edgartown, Massachusetts, for a weekend of R&R. It's everything the Caribbean, Florida, Hilton Head, and Cyprus (ask the Greeks why they despise Britons) aren't: tourist traps, and full of elementary-age children. Nothing against procreation, but our idea of vacation is a location devoid of screaming rugrats, frat boys downing Jaeger bombs, and sowhoreity girls flashing themselves just to be part of a criminal's documentary.
The Greek Chorus has called another annual meeting, this time in the Windy City, which I could never pass up. Only recently, I wish I still had that weekend available to me here in Philadelphia, due to my favorite Band of Canucks playing at The Trocadero the night I fly out. The next night, I have tickets for the Baltimore Orioles vs. the Philadelphia Phillies in a prime location, which alas, I'll have to sell. But in the grand scheme of things, the esoteric Chorus takes precedence.
Next week, I'm taking my life into my own hands and participating in the annual Philadelphia Broad Street Run. Now unlike those who are racing against their own times or taxing themselves to break the finish line tape first, I'll be competing for a last-place finish. Ponder if you will, all the competitors have crossed the line except for one individual still fighting his way through the last mile. And as that single, solitary individual trudges along that last mile, the spectators rise as one and cheer him on to crossing crawling across the finish line. As of now, last place is within reach for me. I sat outside and smoked a fat stogie while reading my latest book; this a few hours after I jogged a 1.25 miles around the neighborhood. And next Saturday night, I'm loading up on turkey and wine. Nothing like a digestive system full of tryptophan and alcohol to give the body a nice shot in the arm. Electrolytes are for losers.
Another thought that popped into my head, recently, was another Top 5 list. Because, like a fat guy, everyone loves a list. A bit embarrased at the time, one of the songs on Laurie's playlist is "Professional Pirate" from Muppet Treasure Island. Let the record show there's no embarrassment for having Muppets songs on your playlist. In fact, here's a Top 5 List of All-Time Muppets songs, including shows and movies. In actuality, it's a battle for 2nd place because #1 is far and away the "thin mint girl scout cookie" of The Muppet Show.
5.) "Lydia The Tattooed Lady"
4.) "Woman"
2.) "It's Not Easy Bein' Green"
1.) "Mahna Mahna"
